autism...really?

it sucks.  i'm just going to be honest.  autism diagnosis sucks.

it's nothing we didn't already feel before the appointments, but hearing it, like FOR REAL, well, it sucks.

it sucks not because it's hard, but because your daughter is not any different of a person than before the diagnosis.

b face

but the real diagnosis...it sucks.

new IEPs...new doctors, new therapists, and more "labels".

it kinda seems like people simply see "autism" and not brooke any more. so here's what i want you to know...

when you walk into a grocery store and you are brooke, you see lights flashing all over the place, you see swirling colors and hear clanging wheels and carts that sound like cymbals in your ear drums...so when she melts down and asks to ride on the bottom of the grocery cart in a ball with her hands over her ears and hoody over her head, please don't make a big deal of it and tell me she needs to learn how to deal with structure.

btongue

live my life...or better yet, live brooke's life...before ever saying one "helpful" word to us.  you have no idea how bedtime can take 3 hours or how a 5 minute car ride to school can make or break an entire morning because the radio came on when the car started and it sets her off.

am i venting or being frustrated...you bet.  because my daughter is not an autistic child.  my daughter is brooke.  a girl who has more compassion in her finger than most people do in their bodies.  a girl who has amazing talent of remembering every single spoken word.  a girl who can relate to animals in a very dr dolittle kinda way.  a girl who has the sweetest smile and can hug tighter than almost anyone in the world.  she's a girl who stands up for what she believes and just doesn't care if you don't like the funky way she dresses.

She's cute though she she has autism, it doesn't matter, she's created for a purpose.

you know how I feel about labels as I was labeled "cripple" most of my life. All I've ever seen was B. She's beautiful and I SO applaud your words!!!

I agree with you! I grew up hearing people make fun of and tell my brother he couldn't do stuff just because he has clubbed hands and only 4 fingers and each of them. I don't see that when I look at my brother. I see him! It makes me mad! I pray that B gets treated like a little girl, a bright, beautiful, curious, sweetheart of a girl!!

I sooo know how you feel, my princess was diagnosed in nov 2011.
It broke my heart...not because she was any different, she's my pride and joy...but because of the fact she will start school in September with a label. Kids can be cruel sometime and I will worry about her all the time.

Your daughter is a wonderful little girl who's lucky to have you as a mommy

random acts...GNO

over at GNO, there's a few of us who decided to challenge ourselves last week to perform a random act of kindness.   i talked with my girls and hubs about what we could do... we reserve some funds each month out of our giving to put towards a current or urgent need that we find.  i think it's important to let the kids see how we give as family...and they should be part of that decision too . as we were talking, and eating chinese...come on, you know there would be eating...i open my fortune cookie.  and this is it!! i was out getting a few minutes of alone time and decided to pay hubs forward by getting jiffy lube to do the oil change.  while i was there, i remembered how hard it was being a single mom.  i remembered that the little things, like oil changes, suddenly became bigger things and honestly, more expensive things.  *light bulb!!!* thomas rang me up for my oil change and asked if they had any scheduled appointments that i could pay for.  he looked at me a little odd......

tuesday tribute---for tuesday

go blog yourself has been on my reading list for quite sometime...and so i really came to love little tuesday whitt and her whole sweet fam and became involved in praying for them in tuesday's battle with that stinky neuroblastoma . tuesday's parents are totally amazing...they inspire me! although tuesday went to play with jesus not so long ago, there have been so many people that are changed because of the courage and strength and honesty of the whitt family. on the day of celebration of tuesday's life, a number of folks who couldn't make it out to the funeral, took their kids on a 'wagie ride', which was one of tuesday's fav things. we all posted up our pics...shared our experiences with each other...and hugged our kiddos a little tighter. my kiddos wagie ride is here . from that precious little tuesday and her honorary wagie ride, a blog spawned...of course...and it is dedicated to nothing more than, in their words, "to keep track of lives touc...

one lucky chick

i have been super blessed with a man who not only loves and adores me, but thinks his daughters are all queens deserving of the most love a daddy can give.  in this family, and with other special needs families, there are days that make being fully engaged, well, let's just say difficult. poop, for instance...it's still an issue in our house.  with kids 20, 12, 10, and 7, you would think that we were well past the poop problems, but we are not.  ASD (autism spectrum disorder) is a beast when it comes to poop. and here's a little insight on me...i'm a gagger, meaning the harsh smell of poop or puke makes be puke.  but the amazing hot hubs, he's a beast on the clean up.  poop on the walls...he scrubs it.  poop pasted on the toilet...he cleans it up.  poop on the shower curtain...he washes it.  and he does it without being nasty.  (he doesn't like it...but he does it.) so, when people see our fam and think it's all amazingly perfect and cu...
