random acts...GNO

over at GNO, there's a few of us who decided to challenge ourselves last week to perform a random act of kindness.

i talked with my girls and hubs about what we could do...we reserve some funds each month out of our giving to put towards a current or urgent need that we find.  i think it's important to let the kids see how we give as family...and they should be part of that decision too.

as we were talking, and eating chinese...come on, you know there would be eating...i open my fortune cookie.  and this is it!!

i was out getting a few minutes of alone time and decided to pay hubs forward by getting jiffy lube to do the oil change.  while i was there, i remembered how hard it was being a single mom.  i remembered that the little things, like oil changes, suddenly became bigger things and honestly, more expensive things.  *light bulb!!!*

thomas rang me up for my oil change and asked if they had any scheduled appointments that i could pay for.  he looked at me a little odd...and said, 'you know someone coming?'.
i told him i just wanted to pay for someone's oil change...or whatever.

this is the point where i saw thomas light up.  he said, 'that is really awesome. any reason?'
'nope.  just want to pass along some good cheer, that's all.'
'ok. well, let's do it then.'
thomas got the gift card set up {{{getting a quick lesson from another store}}} and smiled the entire time.
'would you like to sign the card or put your phone number on it?'
'no. i'll write one simple word. blessings.'
'this has never happened here before.  it's really just so nice.  do you have anyone in particular you want to give it to?'
'thomas, you decide.'
'really? if it's ok with you, i'd like to give it to someone who really needs it.'
i told him i thought that would be great...even one of the peeps who work there if he thought it would be best used.

i drove out of jiffy lube with $30 less in my pocket, and my heart overflowing with joy of remembering thomas smiling and the thought of someone getting a little extra when they get an oil change...seems like a weird place, but why not?

"do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act."

Happy SITS day. I did a little paying forward when I went to the grocery store last week. The lady at the checkout got a couple of items from the lady behind me mixed with my goods. I told her not to fret, paid for them, and said Happy Holidays - we don't need to sweat the small stuff!
This post just filled me with goodness, well actually your whole blog does. I have really enjoyed reading it this morning. Happy SITS day and I look forward to reading more.

I LOVE that!

That happened to me at the Starbucks drive thru once. The car in front of me paid for my coffee which put a huge smile on my face...so I drove away before they could change their minds and charge me anyway...just kidding. I paid for the coffee of the car behind me too. I hope they kept it going. At least for a little while.

This is wonderful..It reminds me of my Dad. After eating our dinner he spoke privatley to our waitress and made sure another family's meal was paid for, He asked that she be certain not to tell them who. I thought it was the sweetest thing, very out of character for my usually cut and dry father.

Great Blog, I look forward to reading more. Congrats on being featured by SITS.

I love the post A Lesson In Not Being Stupid. I have family & friends that are adopted/have adopted.

And I could write a post on the stupid things people say to the parents of twins as well. Like asking how I got pregnant (naturally or fertility drugs?) It was natural, but they don't need to know that. And every time I heard "I'm glad it's you and not me" when my girls were little I would reply "Yes, and so do the babies!" ;)

Someday people will learn. We Hope.

This is totally awesome!! I need to remember this... and know that it doesn't take money to do a random act of kindness. (We don't have any money, so it works for me if I can do something without money!)

I try to always make eye contact and smile a big fat smile at people that look sad or angry. Sometimes they frown at me, but mostly they hesitate and then smile right back at me! That feels good...

It's those small little acts of kindness that mean so much to those who need it. For instance, I'll never be able to repay a friend for cleaning my living room while we were planning the funeral of my baby girl. I know that may be TMI, but that little gesture meant more to me than she will ever know. I hope your big day was fabulous!!

tuesday tribute---for tuesday

go blog yourself has been on my reading list for quite sometime...and so i really came to love little tuesday whitt and her whole sweet fam and became involved in praying for them in tuesday's battle with that stinky neuroblastoma . tuesday's parents are totally amazing...they inspire me! although tuesday went to play with jesus not so long ago, there have been so many people that are changed because of the courage and strength and honesty of the whitt family. on the day of celebration of tuesday's life, a number of folks who couldn't make it out to the funeral, took their kids on a 'wagie ride', which was one of tuesday's fav things. we all posted up our pics...shared our experiences with each other...and hugged our kiddos a little tighter. my kiddos wagie ride is here . from that precious little tuesday and her honorary wagie ride, a blog spawned...of course...and it is dedicated to nothing more than, in their words, "to keep track of lives touc...

A lesson in NOT BEING STUPID

What NOT to say to an adoptive family... Any of you all that know us know that we are an adoptive family...and for those that don't just look at our pic.  It will be obvious.  We are different sizes and shapes and colors.  That's why we call ourselves the "motley crew".  I know, pretty funny. Here's the deal...a few things that I don't need strangers to say to me, or tell me: 1.   I know that I'm white and my #3 daughter is brown.  I live with her.  Your revelation is not mine.   2.   Yes...some of my kids don't look like me.   3.   My kids have ears and are old enough to understand the stupid things you say.  So don't say "where's she from?"  I might have to kill you if you do.  Consider yourself warned. 4.   Just because an AA kid is adopted, doesn't mean they are from Africa.  Look around...here in the US we have AA people too. 5.   Don't ask me which of my kids are my REAL ones.  Clue...we are all real and so are you.....
