Uncommon hero...

Sofia is a preemie...she is 8 months now (12lbs).  She came into this crazy place too early and with a few things stacked up against her.  at birth...her head was the size of a baseball...she was so tiny and delicate.  it was scary, i have to admit...(look at this old link for more pics)
Since RSV and bacteria, and well, anything at that point, are so incredibly dangerous for a preemie and an already compromised immune system, we were sanitizer nazi's, per doctor's order.  i tossed the last can a few days ago and hubby brought it to me.  he said, 'i don't know if i can part with this last can.  this helped keep sofie safe and alive.'
i promised to put the old can down in history and make a pic for our memories.

so, here's to you, de-germinator...saver of all that is good!

What a sweet comment from your husband! We still have hand sanitizer in almost every room of our house, I guess it comes with the preemie territory.

What a little cutie she is. It is incredible to think what some little people endure to stay in this world.

It truly is amazing how strong these little ones are - my twins were also 8 weeks preemie & did an amazing job growing!! It is CRAZY to look back at old photos of them - wow - God has been SO good to us health wise - and seems like you guys too.
blessings on you all.

She is beautiful! I'm with you on the sanitizer. When you have a preemie (or preemies in my case) you can't help but feel a loyalty to the saving graces of hand sanitizing. Ha! Ha! RSV season was the scariest! My little ones will be one next week and I still find myself walking the other direction if I hear a sneeze or a cough if we are out.

Glad your little one is doing so well. What a blessing!

What a sweet husband you have to say such a thing!
My baby was 9 weeks early. Spent almost 2 months in the NICU and had a world of issues. That photo just brings back so many memories. Parting with every single little thing (I totally get it about the can....totally) is so hard. Each thing represents a step toward saving her life. It's such an emotional process. I get it. I really do.

Funny the things we get sentimental about isn't it? And more amazing is the fact that your hubby even said he didn't know if he could part with it. That's precious...as manly as precious can be. :-)

My son was in the hospital for five days last Dec when he was barely a year old and I still have the little piece of cloth that covered his arm IV...I don't know - maybe these things serve as a reminder of how thankful we need to be for healthy kids. Sad that we need reminders sometimes.

Great post.

Thank goodness for that wonderful stuff!
I'm sure the fact that your family is so wonderful had a bit to do with her survival also!
Thank you for your words to me on my sons biting.
I hope all is well.

tuesday tribute---for tuesday

go blog yourself has been on my reading list for quite sometime...and so i really came to love little tuesday whitt and her whole sweet fam and became involved in praying for them in tuesday's battle with that stinky neuroblastoma . tuesday's parents are totally amazing...they inspire me! although tuesday went to play with jesus not so long ago, there have been so many people that are changed because of the courage and strength and honesty of the whitt family. on the day of celebration of tuesday's life, a number of folks who couldn't make it out to the funeral, took their kids on a 'wagie ride', which was one of tuesday's fav things. we all posted up our pics...shared our experiences with each other...and hugged our kiddos a little tighter. my kiddos wagie ride is here . from that precious little tuesday and her honorary wagie ride, a blog spawned...of course...and it is dedicated to nothing more than, in their words, "to keep track of lives touc...

random acts...GNO

over at GNO, there's a few of us who decided to challenge ourselves last week to perform a random act of kindness.   i talked with my girls and hubs about what we could do... we reserve some funds each month out of our giving to put towards a current or urgent need that we find.  i think it's important to let the kids see how we give as family...and they should be part of that decision too . as we were talking, and eating chinese...come on, you know there would be eating...i open my fortune cookie.  and this is it!! i was out getting a few minutes of alone time and decided to pay hubs forward by getting jiffy lube to do the oil change.  while i was there, i remembered how hard it was being a single mom.  i remembered that the little things, like oil changes, suddenly became bigger things and honestly, more expensive things.  *light bulb!!!* thomas rang me up for my oil change and asked if they had any scheduled appointments that i could pay for.  he looked at me a little odd......

A lesson in NOT BEING STUPID

What NOT to say to an adoptive family... Any of you all that know us know that we are an adoptive family...and for those that don't just look at our pic.  It will be obvious.  We are different sizes and shapes and colors.  That's why we call ourselves the "motley crew".  I know, pretty funny. Here's the deal...a few things that I don't need strangers to say to me, or tell me: 1.   I know that I'm white and my #3 daughter is brown.  I live with her.  Your revelation is not mine.   2.   Yes...some of my kids don't look like me.   3.   My kids have ears and are old enough to understand the stupid things you say.  So don't say "where's she from?"  I might have to kill you if you do.  Consider yourself warned. 4.   Just because an AA kid is adopted, doesn't mean they are from Africa.  Look around...here in the US we have AA people too. 5.   Don't ask me which of my kids are my REAL ones.  Clue...we are all real and so are you.....
